Review a hand without rewriting its history

A short explanation can be more useful than a long argument about the result.

Record what was known

In a practice session, note the decision and the information available when it was made. Do not add knowledge from later cards to the original explanation.

Name the type of mistake

Was the issue an illegal play, an arithmetic error or a prediction that did not work out? A rules question needs a reference. An entry error needs a correction. A prediction needs a discussion of its reasoning.

Keep conclusions modest

One favourable outcome is not proof of a reliable method. Record the uncertainty and what you would check next time. Avoid assigning a performance rating from a single hand.

Protect other players’ information

Keep private practice notes private. If you ask for help, remove names and account details. Ask permission before sharing a group’s records elsewhere.
